Instructional Coaching: An Introduction to the Essential Beliefs, Skills, and Habits

Instructional coaches have the potential to have an unmistakably positive impact on how teachers teach and students learn. However, if coaches are going to be effective, they need to know how to be a coach.

For more than two decades, Jim Knight and his research colleagues in Kansas have been working to identify best practices for instructional coaching. The result is the publication of two books: The Impact Cycle (Knight, 2017), a simple and powerful way coaches can help teachers improve teaching to improve student learning and Better Conversations (Knight, 2015), a description of the communication beliefs and habits coaches should employ to foster powerful, learning relationships.

In this session, participants will learn and practice the communication beliefs and habits and the coaching strategies that have identified as critical for coaching. Participants will learn how to implement the identify, learn, and improve components of the impact cycle, receive free tools to use while coaching, be given access to many videos illustrating the entire cycle described in The Impact Cycle. Additionally, participants will learn essential strategies they can imploy to improve how they listen, question, find common ground, foster trust, and engage in dialogue.

This session will provide foundational skills for coaches at any stage in their development and for administrators who oversee coaches and coaching programs.

What Principals Need to Know About Coaching

Principal support is one of the most important factors leading to the success or failure of coaching. When principals support coaches, and coaching is done well, coaches will have an unmistakably positive impact on students’ lives. When principals fail to support coaches, however, even if coaching is done well, coaches will struggle to have an impact. For that reason, one of the most important factors leading to coaching success is that principals learn some fundamentals strategies for providing support.

This workshop provides information on simple but important actions principals should take to support coaches and guides coaches and principals through a series of discussions so that, together, they can make decisions that will lead to dramatic improvements in children’s learning and lives.

We suggest that principals and coaches attend this session together.

Topics Include

  • Identifying district and school top priorities for professional learning
  • Eliminating role ambiguity by clarifying what coaches should and should not do
  • Organizing and prioritizing how coaches use their time,
  • Determiningg what policies should exist regarding teacher confidentiality,
  • Identifying how coaches and principals can partner to enroll teachers in coaching,
  • Developing strategies for addressing teachers who may resist change,
  • Other important topics.

Instructional Coaching for Positive Behavior

When teachers struggle to manage behavior in their classrooms, their students lose important learning opportunities, and teachers themselves too often lose the motivation to teach. Therefore, effective instructional coaches need to have the knowledge and skills necessary to guide teachers toward more effective behavior management in classrooms.

In this session, offered for the first time in California, behavior management expert Randy Sprick, and instructional coaching expert Jim Knight, are partnering to offer a two-day deep study of what instructional coaches need to know about classroom management, and how coaches should share that knowledge with teachers.

Topics to be addressed in this two-day session include:

  • How video can be used by coaches with teachers to get a clear picture of reality in classrooms and to monitor progress toward goals
  • How coaches can set student behavior goals with teachers
  • The most important student behavior data that coaches should gather with students
  • The highest-impact teaching strategies coaches should share with teachers so they can manage behavior effectively
  • Strategies coaches can use to help teachers learn new strategies
  • Strategies instructional coaches can use to help teachers make adaptations until goals are met.
