Neither teachers nor coaches want to waste time or find themselves in unsuccessful conversations. Whether face-to-face or via a virtual platform, helping adults sometimes is often more difficult than helping students. Why do adults resist? This virtual workshop focuses on why helping for change is complex and what research says about what we can do to lessen resistance to change.

 

For individuals with schedule conflicts or who live in different time zones, this workshop is recorded and available for registrants to watch on-demand for 30 days.

 

 

Course Outline

 

Week One: The Complexities of Helping, Part 1 

  • An overview of the research behind helping adults, Part 1
  • A discussion of Change, Identity, and Thinking

[Before the next session, participants work with adults through the lenses of Change, Identity, and Thinking and come back ready to discuss their findings.]

Week Two:   The Complexities of Helping, Part 2 

  • Participants discuss their experiences working with adults paying particular attention to Change, Identity, and Thinking
  • Troubleshooting any roadblocks that may have risen
  • A discussion of Status and Motivation

[Before the next session, participants work with adults through the lenses of Status and Motivation and come back ready to discuss their findings.]

Week Three:  Partnership, Part 1 

  • Participants discuss their experiences working with adults, paying particular attention to Status and Motivation and reviewing Change, Identity, and Thinking
  • Troubleshooting any roadblocks that may have risen
  • A discussion of the first three Partnership Principles: Equality, Choice, and Voice
  • Information on video recording and why it’s important to get a clear picture of reality in conversations with adults

[Before the next session, participants video record a coaching conversation, paying particular attention to Equality, Choice, and Voice.]

Week Four:  Partnership, Part 2 

  • Participants discuss their experiences with video recording coaching conversations and/or partnership conversations 
  • Troubleshooting any roadblocks that may have risen
  • A discussion of the final four Partnership Principles: Dialogue, Reflection, Praxis, and Reciprocity

[Before the next session, participants video record coaching conversations where they pay particular attention to Dialogue, Reflection, and Reciprocity.)

Week Five:  Putting it All Together 

  • Participants discuss their experiences having conversations with adults, reflecting on their use of the Partnership Principles, as well as how the understanding the complexities of helping has informed their conversations
  • Troubleshooting any roadblocks that may have risen
  • Suggestions for how participants can continue to learn and improve as coaches 

[Participants continue to meet weekly to discuss their progress as coaches.]

 

 

*Please note: If a workshop cohort does not meet enrollment minimum, registrations will be transferred to another offered cohort date of your choice.
